Sara Morris, Ph.D. candidate, is the recipient of a 2023 Library Research Grant at the Getty Research Institute and a 2023 NCECA Helen Zucker Seeman Curatorial, Research, and Critical Writing Fellowship for Women. Both awards are in support of critical archival research for Chapter Two of her dissertation, “Cutting a Figure: Dora de Larios’s Ceramic Representations of Chicana Identity.” This chapter examines the mother and goddess sculptures by Los Angeles-based Chicana artist Dora de Larios (1933-2018) created during the rise of the Chicano Movement and Second Wave Feminism in the United States. By situating De Larios’s syncretic practice alongside established histories of studio ceramics and feminist art on the West Coast, it proposes an expanded genealogy of sculpture to underscore the conceptual sophistication of Chicana ceramics in an era of contested bodily autonomy, political disenfranchisement, and policed borders. The NCECA Fellowship also provides full registration to attend its 57th annual conference, Current that will take place in Cincinnati, Ohio, March 15-18, 2023.
