UCSB has embarked on a significant undertaking to repatriate Indigenous ancestors and cultural items to descendant communities throughout the United States. This initiative, which began over a decade ago, has gained renewed momentum due to recent campus policy (UC Native American Cultural Affiliation and Repatriation Policy), state legislation (calNAGPRA), and updated regulations to the federal NAGPRA (Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act). This presentation aims to explore the impact of these laws and policies on research and education at UCSB, strategies for initiating consultation and building relationships with Native Nations, and the steps taken by UCSB to honor Indigenous heritage and address historical injustices.
